What is Collagen?

Collagen is a strong protein naturally produced by your body. It’s synthesized mainly from two amino acids (glycine & proline). Its the major component of connective tissue as well as your hair, skin, nail, and joints. It is the most abundant protein in the body and makes up approximately 33% of the total protein in our body. Basically, Collagen is your body’s basic building blocks necessary for the creation of skin, muscle, bone & cartilage.

It is a hard insoluble and fibrous protein. In most collagens, the molecules are packed together to form long thin fibrils. These act as supporting structures that bind cells to each other and gives the skin strength & elasticity. Collagen is secreted by a variety of different cells, but primarily by connective tissue cells. When we’re young, the body consistently produces collagen but production naturally declines with age.

In the dermis or the middle layer of skin, collagen helps form a fibrous network of cells called fibroblasts, upon which new cells can grow. It also plays a role in relacing & restoring dead skin cells. Some collagen acts as protective coverings for delicate organs in the body ie. Kidneys.

When collagen becomes weakened & less substantial it begins to sag often showing as crows feet or turkey neck. This is due to collagen depletion. Research shows that collagen levels begin to decline from the age of 25. By the time we get to 40, we will have lost around one-third of our collagen.

Collagen is a “complex protein” as it contains 19 different amino acids. These include a mix of both nonessential & essential types. Collagen is made up of three chains bond together in a tight triple helix. Each chain is over 1,400 amino acids long. Proline & Glycine are the primary types of amino acids found in collagen chains. These amino acids are not abundant in animal meats, which is where most people eating a “western diet” get the majority of their protein from. This means that most people are lacking in these amino acids in their diets.

  1. Proline – Proline makes up about 15% of collagen it helps protect blood vessels improve joint health & has various cardiovascular benefits.
  2. Glycine – Around one-third of the protein found in collagen is glycine. Glycine job is to ensure our cells function properly. it also helps build healthy DNA strands & is one of the three amino acids that form creatine which promotes healthy muscle growth & boosts energy production during workouts.
  3. Glutamine – One of the most important & abundant amino acids in the body. Glutamine is both created within our muscles & also obtained from food sources. Research shows that glutamine has helped with anxiety, tension, sleep disorders a lack of concentration, poor digestive system.
  4. Arginine – Arginine (also called L-arginine) breaks down into nitric oxide within the body, which is an important compound for heart health.
