Could you be suffering from Leaky gut Syndrome!

WHAT IS LEAKY GUT SYNDROME?

Every day more and more people are becoming intolerant to gluten, dairy or certain fruits or vegetables, meats and lots more. It really is becoming a huge problem. This is very obvious to see with all the big supermarkets and local shops stocking so many products Gluten-free now. There is even a coeliac week every year to help create awareness, it’s May 9th to 15 this year. That in its self shows how much of a problem its become.

I recently experienced this with certain foods, also having spoken to my family and friends i realised they’re having the same problem. That really got me thinking about the issue and I started to research it online this time last year. That’s when I came across a condition called “LEAKY GUT SYNDROME” I was shocked to read and learn about the short and the longterm effects this condition can cause it not treated or managed in time.

The role of the gastrointestinal tract is to digest food, absorb tiny pieces of food needed for energy. It also transports nutrients like your vitamins and minerals through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. A healthy intestine is essential for your whole overall health and a damaged gut leads to an unhealthy body since this is the gateway for energy and nutrients. With Leaky Gut, damaged cells in your intestines don’t produce the enzymes needed for proper digestion, as a result your body cannot absorb essential nutrients which can lead to hormone imbalances and a weakened immune.

“Leaky Gut or Intestinal Permeability” is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged creating holes allowing food molecules that your body doesn’t normally allow through. Undigested food particles, toxic waste products, yeast and bacteria start to leak through the intestines and flood the bloodstream causing food allergies and autoimmune disease.

Think of your gut lining like a net protecting unwanted substances from entering your body. It has tiny holes small enough only for nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to pass through, then these tiny holes start to loosen and become larger allowing unwanted substances which then can manifest into several chronic and autoimmune diseases.

The foreign substances entering the blood can cause an autoimmune response in the body including inflammatory and allergic reactions such as migraines, irritable bowel, eczema, chronic fatigue, food allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, brain fog, psoriasis, chron’s, asthma & many more. Your gut bacteria and the condition of your gut lining strongly affect your health.

The first reaction your body has to these “foreign” bodies in your blood is to fight them off. Initially, your liver is called into action to work overtime and try to screen out all the particles that should not be present. In most cases, the liver has no chance of keeping up with the constant flow of waste into your blood and all the toxins, undigested food molecules, yeast, and other pathogens start to accumulate in your body.

This is when your immune system goes into full battle mode and fight trying to rid the body of these toxins. More often than not, the body cannot keep up with the number of substances coming through and the majority of these foreign bodies absorb into tissues throughout the body causing them to inflame.

Foods that cause inflammation actually damage the cells in the epithelial tissue, which is your gut tissue this is what causes the tight holes in the gut lining to break down and cause leaky gut. If you are having sensitivities to certain foods where you didn’t before you might have leaky gut. Any undigested foods that are absorbed into the bloodstream and now considered the enemies and your immune system will develop a reaction to many of them leading to food intolerance.

Inflammation is your immune system’s response to foreign invaders, toxins or cell injury. Its purpose is to help your body attack these unwanted invaders and begin to repair any damaged structures. Acute (short-term) inflammation, such as insect bite or injury, is generally considered a good thing. Without it, pathogens like bacteria and viruses could easily take over your body causing sickness or even death.

However, another type of inflammation called chronic, low grade or systemic inflammation may be harmful, as it’s longterm and may affect your entire body attacking your body’s cells. Chronic systemic inflammation is now believed to be one of the leading drivers of some of the worlds most serious conditions. These include obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia, lupus, MS, Fibromyalgia, coeliac, thyroid disorders, depression, and anxiety to name a few.

What Causes Leaky Gut Syndrome?

The Gut is the largest immune system organ in the body if the immune systems is compromised in any way your body is in trouble. That’s why it’s so important to watch what we eat and drink on a daily basis. Also very important to try and keep stress to a minimum and exercise as often as possible. Here are some factors that could cause Leaky Gut syndrome.

1. Diet– Gluten(a protein found in wheat, Rye, Barley) in many cases is the no.1 cause of leaky gut. Food like gluten, soy, dairy, processed food, fast food, and alcohol can cause leaky gut. Also consuming high amounts of refined sugar, preservatives and refined flour can damage the gut lining.

2. Chronic Stress– Almost always results in a suppressed immune system. A weakened immune system cannot handle doing its normal job and gets overrun with pathogens very quickly. This increases overall gut inflammation leading to increased permeability of the intestinal lining.

3.Inflammation– Any type of inflammation in the gut can lead to leaky gut. This can be brought on by low stomach acid, yeast overgrowth (candida), bacteria overgrowth, infection, parasites, and pathogens.

4.Medication– Any medication or prescription or over the counter pain relievers with Aspirin or ibuprofen can irritate the intestinal lining and decrease the mucosal levels. Non-steroidal and antibiotics can also lead to leaky gut syndrome. Antibiotics kill good bacteria. This can lead to an imbalance of bacteria in the intestine and can cause candida yeast overgrowth. Always speak to your doctor before changing or lowering your medication.

5.Yeast– Yeast is found in normal gut flora but as soon as it begins to get out of hand it manifests into multi-celled fungus usually (candida). That then grows tentacles to grab onto the intestine lining making its own holes in the lining.

6. Zinc deficiency– Zinc is a critical piece of maintaining a strong intestinal lining. A deficiency of this vitamin can lead to the mucosal lining losing strength and becoming more permeable. Studies have shown that supplementing with zinc when it is deficient can dramatically improve your intestinal lining.

Foods that cause inflammation in your GI tract

Wheat (gluten)

medication

Soy

Corn

Non-organic dairy & animal products

refined sugars and carbohydrates

Additives and preservatives found in processed foods

Bottom line it’s not the foods that you are eating that are the root of the problem, its the leaky gut letting the food molecules into your bloodstream leading to severe food allergies, such as gluten to a coeliac or peanut allergies. The good news is, once you begin to heal your gut, the food sensitivity and intolerances you have often go away.

HOW TO HEAL LEAKY GUT SYNDROME

1. Diet-One of the most important changes you need to make to your life if you want to get rid of Leaky gut is your diet. You need to avoid certain food and supplements to speed up the healing process. Even if you’re eating all the right foods, it may not be enough as some of the “healthy foods” you eat every day could actually be driving the inflammation making your leaky gut syndrome worse. When you develop a leaky gut you can become allergic to any food that you eat, including foods that are normally good for you e.g whole bread, milk. Therefore is vital that you determine the underlying food sensitivities and remove them from your diet.

Food with no nutritional content like your processed foods, fast food, junk food. These foods are very hard on your digestive system. Also, foods that contain too much sugar or refined sugar as it is the number one food source of yeast in the intestine. Cutting out irritants like caffeine, alcohol, starches, etc.

Vegetables and fruits are always a good choice but you have to choose what to eat. Green vegetables are good and organic meat should be eaten in moderation.

2. Supplements– Play a very important part in healing your leaky gut but only the right supplements at the right time. Supplements like zinc and vitamin D also fish oils have also shown to really help heal the gut.

3. Probiotics– Can Increase the number of good bacteria in your gut. There is a balance between the good and bad bacteria that should not be disrupted. Certain foods and antibiotics can cause this imbalance with the bad outweighing the good. Probiotics are a must in order to restore the balance and prevent yeast overgrowth and help prevent the lining from getting further damaged.

4. Fiber – Promotes a healthy bowel movement removing waste from the body. Fiber can be found in whole grains, rice, fruit, veg, and nuts. You can always take a supplement if you can get your fiber intake from your food.

5. Digestive Enzymes – People with leaky gut will nearly always have problems with digesting foods so you might need to take a digestive enzyme. Fruit and vegetables do contain enzymes most of the time it’s not enough. Taking a supplement will really help break down your food more effectively.

6.Collagen is another fantastic way to heal your gut lining, this is a vital protein that we make naturally in our bodies, and recently has been found that taking collagen really helped with their gut condition. I have an article written all about collagen if you are interested in having a read. It’s a very very important protein, it’s basically the glue that holds our bodies together.

Really hope this information helps someone. I really would love to hear if anyone has any stories or anything to share in relation to this condition.

thanks for taking the time to read this post.
